Simple Definition:

A hernia is a medical condition where an organ [a part of the body that performs a specific function] or tissue [a group of cells that work together] pushes through a weak spot or opening in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue a type of body tissue that connects and supports other tissues].

Examples:

  • A hernia can occur when part of the intestine pushes through a weakened area in the abdominal wall.
  • Inguinal hernia is a common type of hernia where the intestines protrude through a weak spot in the groin area. (inguinal: relating to the groin)

Very Simple Definition:

A hernia is when something sticks out from where it’s supposed to be in your body.

Examples:

  • When your bellybutton pops out and looks like a lump, it can be a hernia.
  • Sometimes when you lift something heavy, a bulge can appear in your groin area, and that’s a hernia.
